The final medal design for the 2018 WorldSkills National Championships has now been selected.

The winning design, submitted by 2003 Skillaroo and international gold medalist in Graphic Design Technology, Sarah Jones, was chosen from a pool of creative and innovative submissions. Sarah’s textured design conveys a geometric representation of the striking and contemporary frontage of Sydney’s International Convention Centre (ICC), making it a fitting memento for 2018 competitors. Sarah also designed the medal for the National Championships held in Melbourne in 2016.

Sarah has previously judged, written competitions and assisted with training at the 2004, 2006 and 2008 National Championships. She was Expert for Australia 2009 – 2015 training the next generation of Skillaroos and in 2016 was selected as WorldSkills International Skill Competition Manager for Graphic Design Technology.

The winning medal design will be presented to the first, second and third place winners of all skill competitions at the Closing Ceremony of the National Championships on Tuesday 5th June at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Sydney.

Sarah’s winning design will be revealed closer to the Skills Show opening at the beginning of June.

For West Australian Cabinetmaker, Nick Johnston, a trip across the country from Perth to Melbourne in 2016 to compete in the WSA National Competition has resulted in him part filling his passport in just 2 years.

Nick went on to win the 2016 gold medal in Melbourne and with his trademark enthusiasm and dedication to his craft and the task at hand, he set about qualifying to become a 2017 Skillaroo. Preparations included a trip to Manchester for the UK selection event and a further training event in China later the same year. Hard work and support from his employer, Studio Milton, his family and friends and his WorldSkills support network saw his dream come true and Nick went on to represent Australia in Abu Dhabi in 2017.

Nick reflected on the many weekends he devoted to additional training leading up to the event and affirms that his Medallion of Excellence earned at the International Competition was worth every minute.

Just as life seemed to be heading down the “normal” track, Nick has just received an invitation to represent Australia and WorldSkills Australia at World Wood Day celebrations in Angkor Wat, Siem Reap Cambodia as an Invitee to the International Young Adult Furniture Making Invitational, IYAFMI.

The invitation is a for a fully funded travel experience. Nick will be taking a project of his own design and just a bag of hand tools to the event and will display his talents over the 5-day event, which also features wood turners, carvers, marionette makers, sculptors and all manner of things wood.

“[I’m excited] to be deeply immersed in another culture, catching up with friends made in Abu Dhabi and to experience work methods and designs from a dozen different countries will be a unique experience. I have heard about the event in previous years and I hope to enjoy it fully and grow the high opinion the host organisation, the International Wood Culture Society, already has of Australian tradies. This is going to be a sensational experience, not possible unless I had first become involved with WorldSkills.”

World Wood Day is March 21st.

The Skills Pathway Expo will form a key part of Skills Show Australia 2018, a flagship skills and trades event, which will be held in Sydney in June.

For the first time WorldSkills Australia will partner with Velg Training to deliver a hub of reputable resources and information relating to VET pathways, as well as access to key industry leaders. The Expo will demonstrate the diversity of VET options, and providers, available for students across a variety of skills and trades.

Registered Training Organisations across Australia are now being invited to join other leaders in the vocational education space by being involved in the Skills Pathway Expo.

WorldSkills Australia is hosting the Skills Show and CEO Brett Judd said the Skills Pathway Expo would play a major role in raising the profile of skills in Australia.

“The main goal for us is to promote skills excellence and demonstrate the importance of VET as a pathway for young people to consider,” said Mr Judd. “By partnering with Velg Training to deliver the Skills Pathways Expo, we are striving to be key drivers in helping our future workforce better understand the skills they need to adapt to the demands of a changing economy, all within a fun and interactive environment.”

RTOs will be given the opportunity to meet and build relationships with potential students, promote and increase awareness of vocational education opportunities and launch new courses that are being created to fill the skills shortage areas within Australia’s economy.

Velg Training CEO Michelle Weaver said: “Velg Training is very excited to be partnering with WorldSkills Australia through the Skills Pathway Expo. The Skills Pathway Expo has been specifically designed to provide an opportunity for those visiting the national championships to make an immediate and direct connection to RTOs that offer nationally-recognised qualification vocational pathways.

“Having these VET pathway providers under one roof will be a bonus for parents, prospective students and school representatives wanting to explore the options for school leavers.”

To be held at the state-of-the-art International Convention Centre (ICC) in Sydney, the Skills Show will be a fun, interactive and inspiring event. During the Skills Show, more than 400 apprentices and trainees will compete in 50 skills at the WorldSkills Australia National Championships. They will also battle it out for the opportunity to go on to represent Australia at the 45th WorldSkills international competition in Kazan, Russia in 2019.

The Skills Show will also feature:

A selection of hands-on skills, Try’aSkills’ – Visitors can try out a skill and learn more from industry experts

Tech Hub – Partner activations from industry leaders featuring virtual reality, cloud computing and cyber security pathways
