Five minutes with…Matt Levings

Energetic, enthusiastic and happy-go-lucky, Matt Levings is an apprentice electrician in Mermaid Beach whose journey started with a chance encounter during an overnight sailing race, “I was originally a swimmer on the Australia Swim Team, but after I retired I wondered what career I was going to pursue.

I was on an overnight sailing race with an unfamiliar crew when I met a guy named Eli. He told me about his career being an electrician, and the next day I embarked on my journey toward being an electrician by enrolling into a Certificate 2 in Electrotechnology at TAFE Queensland Ashmore Campus.

Through that, I was fortunate enough to start an electrical apprenticeship with S&C Electrical,” Matt says.

Describing his WorldSkills experience thus far as ‘fun, challenging and educational’, Matt is focusing on getting his technical skills ready for the competition, “I’m training with my teachers at TAFE and researching various electrical techniques in my down time,” he says.

Now in his third year of his Electrotechnology, Matt is looking forward to what experiences the Championships will bring, “I’m looking forward to the great experience that WorldSkills will being and working with a great team.

I’m hoping to learn some new skills and showcase some of the skills I’ve already learnt at TAFE,” Matt explains.

Matt’s goals are already directed towards his future in an industry that allows him to apply his knowledge to real life situations, “My short-term goal is to finish my electrical apprenticeship and obtain a contractor’s licence to eventually start my own electrical company. In five years’ time, I hope to be a successful electrician,” Matt says.
