Five minutes with…Joel Harrison

Tasmanian Machinist and competitor at this year’s National Championships, Joel Harrison, has always been creative. From Lego and BMX tinkering when he was younger to his current passion, machining, Joel loves the satisfaction of making something special.

Currently in the third year of his Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical Trade) and a Regional winner in 2017, Joel is looking forward to the National Championships in June.

“I am honoured to represent my home state in doing what I love, and I hope that I make them all proud with my efforts.” he says, when asked how he feels about representing his region at the WorldSkills Australia National Championships. Keen to push himself past his comfort zone, he describes his competition experiences so far as exciting, challenging and interesting.

Joel found his trade after choosing to do a Certificate II in Engineering in year 12. He now works for Saunders and Ward Engineers in Kingston, Tasmania. When not working, Joel enjoys mountain biking, cars and making things. Following the Championships, he hopes to finish his Certificate III before moving on to Certificate IV and his diploma.
