Five minutes with…Elliott Nunn

Elliott Nunn is in the second year of his plumbing apprenticeship and is working with Duncan’s Plumbing Heating and Air-conditioning company. Yet somehow, he manages to run a small garden maintenance/landscaping business on the side which he has been running for over four years now!

In the lead-up to the competition, he has been training with Rodney Apps at CIT Fyshwick, focusing on going through the different aspects of the competition and concentrating on the skills needed to brush-up on and honing the skills his already has.

Elliott says his biggest influences would have to be his father and both grandfathers as they have always supported his passion, advising him to use his hands and his brain to find the solution to any problem, “I always remember helping my dad when I was young with general house maintenance and my passion grew from then into what it is now. None of my family members were or are plumbers, but my grandfather was a builder and he taught me a lot about plumbing and building. He was one of the main reasons I became a plumber,” Elliott says.

The best part of the job for Elliott would be that every day is different. “I love that there is a large amount of diversity between the jobs and that every job may not have the same solution, so you need to think out of the box. There is also a great sense of accomplishment when you look back and see what you have completed knowing that you put a lot of hard hours to get to that end result.”

Describing his WorldSkills journey so far as tremendous, unforgettable and remarkable, an experience he would highly recommend to everyone. Elliott is quite nervous in the lead up to the Skills Show in Sydney, but he is also very excited. “I can’t wait to get to Sydney and give it my all and try to make the region, my tech teachers and my employer proud. It will be a great weekend and it will be a great experience regardless of the result.”
