Five minutes with…Declan Cronin

Declan Cronin studies at North Coast TAFE for his Certificate IV in Graphic Design, “I always knew I wanted to pursue a Graphic Design career ever since I was in Primary School. My older brother studied a Bachelor of Visual Communication Design at Newcastle University, where he harnessed the skills to go off and make his own business as a Wedding Photographer. He inspired me to go study Graphic Design at TAFE where you gain a-lot of hands on experience and obtain great skills in the industry of Graphic Design.”

Once he has completed his diploma in Graphic Design, Declan is eager to obtain a job in the graphic design industry for further expanding his skills and knowledge. “I enjoy the satisfaction of creating unique branding for clients through logos, posters, web banners, t-shirts, business cards, brochures, digital prints and editorial design.”

In practise for this year’s Skills Show in Sydney, Declan has been brushing up on the past national WorldSkills modules, with the help and guidance of his head-teacher Lorrae and mentor Michael. “It has been very rewarding to sit down and refresh my skills and techniques in the lead up to the competition. I am so proud to make it to the National level at WorldSkills Australia, and every experience going forward is an achievement. This is a very big step in the right direction for my career as a Graphic Designer. I heard about the WorldSkills Competition through my teachers at TAFE and they believed it was a great opportunity to participate in to test my skills and knowledge”.

Declan has described his experience with WorldSkills to date as overwhelming, exciting, and a real honour. “At first, I wasn’t aware of how big this opportunity was, until I was awarded 1st Place and was selected to compete at the Skills Show in June. I am very honoured to be chosen to represent my region (North Coast) in Sydney. I am very excited to attend, just to experience what it has to offer, and do my best with all my hard work and preparation. “
